Daniel is a Matses. He has worked as a bilingual schoolteacher in Matses villages before choosing a career in politics and he’s now the mayor of Colonia Angamos, the closest non-indigenous town to Matses territory.
The Matses are an indigenous people living in Peruvian Amazonia. They lived in isolation deep in the rainforest until recently, but in the past thirty years, they have become closer to the world of ‘chotac’ – non-indigenous people. Their traditional lifestyle in the rainforest is based on hunting and foraging, and to present date, the elders continue to hunt wild animals, fight off Jaguars, use medicinal plants and tell stories of dangerous forest spirits.
